The Geometry of Sound and Noise An exceptional worded social criticism, a mathematic essay about dimensions, obsession for minimalistic artwork and above all an excellent sense for modern electronic sound design with retro touch – the ingredients for a music project couldn ́t tease better. And you can find all in the album “Planisphère(s)” by SIGNAL~BRUIT.The 1884 released book "Flatland – a Romance of many Dimensions"* inspired the French electronic music artist Member U-0176 to start a new music project. Written by the English schoolmaster Edwin A Abbott the book is mostly interpreted as a comment on the hierarchy of Victorian culture, but the novella's more enduring contribution is its examination of dimensions. „Flatland“ describes a two - dimensional world occupied by geometric figures, whereofwomen are simple line - segments, while men are portrayed as polygons whose social status is determined by their regularity and the number of their sides, with a Circle considered the "perfect" shape. For Member U-0176 the most important thing in „Flatland“is, that it describes the difficulties of people to understand unusual and non-viewable things and then criticize theway to react to this impossibility. This reaction can be individual or collective, but it's a more global critic of imagination limits. The cover clearly refers to this main aspect as it shows a 3D figure, the sphere, emerging from a flat 2D surface and the need of mental abstraction. People need to see it as a 3D object although it's obviously a 2D representation on a flat surface of paper. As you can imagine the first track “Polygones” works with this basic idea of the social structure in „Flatland“. And as well as the geometric population undergoes modifications the sound of SIGNAL~BRUIT evolves.
Carefully designed analog sounds start to modulate, spherical soundscapes and noises are thrilling the listener before minimalistic electronic drum patterns are changing the restrained atmosphere of the song to a demanding electro track. Even there is a focused amount of elements in each track the sound space is filled with electronic complexity.
Creative mastermind behind SIGNAL~BRUIT is Member U-0176 who lives in Marseille and can already look back to a considerable discography. With his Electro-Band „Celluloide“ he released several albums, singles, EPs and started with „Thee Hyphen“ his first solo-project. Member U-0176also appeared as remixer for bands like Nitzer Ebb and Mesh.
