With their concept album ‘In Gedenken’, which was enthusiastically received by critics and fans alike, still reverberating, SPIELBANN prove that they can be counted among those restless spirits who are much too busy to just rest on their laurels.
Just a few months later, the quintet from the German state of Saarland delivers a collection of 14 tracks that can, and indeed should, be seen as an important supplement to the collection of stories that made up In Gedenken. Here the listener is presented with a few more enchanting chapters to the anthology of the ghostly candles, and which represent a welcome continuation of that album. The reader is permitted to catch a last glimpse, as if long-lost manuscript pages from a long-forgotten book featuring one of his heroes from a novel had expanded in front of his very eyes. The two exclusive new tracks, ‘Feuerteufel’ and ‘PhantomSchmerz’, quickly make it clear that the aim of this release is not to gather up odds and ends that never had a chance of making it onto the album. No, on this release, the tales about the ‘keeper’ instead break new ground. The spirits did NOT want to fall silent.
Another important part of this release is a complete (!) SPIELBANN concert, recorded on ASP’s ‘VERFALLEN’ tour last autumn. It was above all SPIELBANN’s live qualities that drew them to the attention of gothic novel rock icon Asp as part of his unparalleled ‘MäzenatenTumult’ (PatronageTumult) newcomer campaign in 2013. On that basis he decided to bring the band under his experienced wing (or rather: butterfly wings?), and was convinced that this highly energetic band should not be kept away from a wider audience any longer! Just as he did with In Gedenken, the star of the dark alternative scene also contributes to ‘Wiedergänger’.
To a great extent, this is due to the vocal performance, which will come to set new standards within the scene. In Seb Storm and his female counterpart Nic Frost, two voices have found each other that could not harmonise with each other better. Their voices radiate a quite unique energy; not just on stage but also on their studio albums.
For the ‘Wiedergänger’ CD, the singers posed themselves a very special challenge: in order to push their stage personas to their very limits, Nic and Seb slipped into the role of their respective vocal counterpart. In doing so, they have succeeded in eliciting completely new facets from two absolutely outstanding pieces from the In Gedenken stories. With the question, “What if…” on their lips, they each sought out the other’s most stirring solo piece and then, with great dedication, produced their own reinterpretation of the story.
An elaborately recorded new version of a classic SPIELBANN track from 2006 and a gripping piano version of the morbid masterpiece ‘Haus des Vergessens’ round off the ‘Wiedergänger’ collection.
The artwork seamlessly complements the visual world of In Gedenken, because Wiedergänger is an absolutely indispensable component of this great collection of emotional rollercoasters/ghost train rides.
Timo Würz (MARVEL, George Lucas, Disney, FESTA) also ennobles ‘Wiedergänger’ with his visual nightmare worlds.
‘Wiedergänger’: Terrifyingly thrilling!
